MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Seaparo Sekoati

THE MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Seaparo Sekoati launched Tourism Month, announcing a plethora of activities as part of celebrating spring and tourism on the process. He also encouraged the citizens of Limpopo to travel their province as a way of growing tourism and boosting the provincial economy. This media launch which took place at the Forever Resort Swadini in Hoedspruit took place against the backdrop of the announcement by South African Tourism and Stats SA that Limpopo Province is leading all the provinces on the domestic tourism front. The tourism sector as the biggest employer in the country is seen as a solution to challenges of poverty and unemployment facing the country and Limpopo in particular. The sector has the propensity to create more job opportunities given its state of resilience during economic challenges such as the technical recession that the country is experiencing at this stage.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) annually identifies a theme that seeks to create awareness about the importance of tourism in every society for the whole year. This year’s them is: Sustainable Tourism for Development. The theme calls for all and sundry not to be oblivious of the importance of preserving tourism including environment in the quest for development.

The 2017 tourism month theme, as driven by South African Tourism, is “I Do/We Do Tourism Sustainably” in line with the international one. The MEC for LEDET, Mr. Seaparo Sekoati will unveil the Tourism Month Calendar of events to media and tourism stakeholders present.

The Interim CEO of LTA, Gladwin Kotsedi said, “Tourism Month is now in full swing and we urge our people to take advantage of the various special packages the industry has to offer as we celebrate Tourism Month. The Agency will partner with all the relevant stakeholders to identify new hidden tourism gems of the Province to be packaged for marketing. This was also encouraged by the Minister of Tourism Ms. Tokozile Xasa during her speech at the national media launch of Tourism Month in Dullstroom, Mpumalanga Province on 26 July 2017. “…together we can ensure that domestic tourism drives traffic into smaller, lesser known parts of the country that are just waiting to be uncovered and explored”, said Minister of Tourism, Ms. Tokoile Xasa.
