FOURTEEN tavern teams from all over Mzansi will be repping their kasis when they battle it out in the finals of the 2017 Smirnoff Raga Bolo Championship – all for the chance to be crowned as this year’s champs and score the R150,000 grand prize.
The runners-up won’t walk away empty handed either and will receive R50 000. It all goes down from 10 AM on 8 July at the Soweto Cricket Oval in Gauteng.
Sports Presenter, Thomas Mlambo will be emceeing the event, while DJs like Capital, Ankletap, Shimza and Panache Boyz will be on the decks, making the crowd move. Plus, all five Smirnoff Kings – Sibusiso “Rhee” Zuma, Thabo Mngomeni, Benedict Vilakazi, Pollen Ndlanya and Stanton Fredericks – will be there to snap selfies with fans and spur teams on from the sidelines.
Since March, 136 teams have taken part in the action-packed five-a-side street soccer tournament. Now, the best from each province will be facing off in the ultimate clash. The teams that will be contending are:
* Cibane Eating House and Y Two K Tavern from KwaZulu-Natal;
* Mhlanga Tavern and Bongo Lennys Place from the Western Cape;
* SpeakEasy Tavern and Mavela’s Tavern from the Eastern Cape,
* Sehlono Inn and Pitsos Tavern from the Free Sate,
* Angelinas Liquor Tavern and 264 Zone Place from Limpopo; and
* Thusi’s Place, Bruno’s Liquor Restaurant, Reloads Place and Phineas Tavern from Gauteng.
Elvis Makhubela, owner of 264 Zone Place in Limpopo, is ecstatic about his team making it through to this stage of the competition. He shares: “We need to maintain the pace that we have, in order to succeed.” Should they win, the team would like to put some of the prize money towards the education of underprivileged children in their community.
The proprietor of the Eastern Cape-based SpeakEasy Tavern, Fundile Jonas would also like to use the team’s possible winnings to uplift their local community.
Joseph Ramarumo, manager of Sehlono Inn in the Free Sate says that he and his team can’t wait to win the competition and, if they succeed, will be using the prize money to grow the business and renovate the tavern.
