Philly’s games continue to grow stronger

THE highly anticipated Philly’s games will be hosting the 27th edition which kick started on the 16th of December in different Tembisa sport grounds.
The Philly’s games will take place in different venues including, Ivory Park (16-18) Esangweni Grounds (19-21), Phomolong Sports Centre (22-23), Esiqongweni Grounds (24-28), Mehlareng Stadium (29-) and Makhulong Stadium (30.
All games will start at 10.am until 6pm.
The 2017’s edition of the Philly’s games saw teams from different townships lock horns in the hope of pocketing the first prize money of R200 000.
The football supporters will be entertained by exciting Kasi flair that will be dished out at Philly’s games from the 16 to 30 December 2018.
Having been established in 1992 during political struggle, this spectacular tournament has been historically used as a tool to bring peace in the communities of Tembisa.
Over the years a number of Premier Soccer League players were discovered at Philly’s games.
This year it will be no different as upcoming superstars are likely to be identified.
They started with just two games but there will be 24 teams participating in a knockout format. There are eight seeded teams who will start playing in the last round of 16. The 16 unseeded teams play over two legs with no away goals rule.
The footballers from under 13’s, 15’s and 17’s will be expected to kick start their careers at this tournament.
Founder of the Philly’s games, Philly Mathebula said “the games which resonate with the people in the township have grown over the years from attracting few fans to over seven thousand per day. “Our fans grow each day; in the morning we start with about 3000 fans but ending up with around 7000,” he said. “Last year we had about 12 000 fans in our first game but we were disappointed by the rain on the final.”
Philly’s Games are also attracting big sponsors every year and this time around they have, locally produced beer Soweto Gold, Soft drink bottling company Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) and Heineken.
