Everything You Need to Know About Canan Moodie

In the world of South African rugby, few names have risen as rapidly or as spectacularly as Canan Moodie. At just 22 years old, this dynamic back has already cemented his place as one of the most exciting talents in international rugby, representing both the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship and the South African national team.

The Unlikely Beginning

Born on November 5, 2002, in Paarl, Western Cape, Moodie’s journey to rugby stardom was far from conventional. Unlike many of his Springbok teammates, he wasn’t always considered a standout player during his school years. Despite his natural pace, he was regarded as an “average” player at Boland Landbou School, where he played as a centre. He rarely made his school’s ‘A’ team in his younger years and never attended the prestigious Craven Week festival.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted most of his final school rugby season, but this setback would prove to be just a temporary obstacle in what would become a meteoric rise through the ranks of South African rugby.

The Academy Years and Breakthrough

After completing high school, Moodie made the pivotal decision to join the Blue Bulls Academy in Pretoria, where he competed in the 2021 RSA provincial under-20 championship. This move would change the trajectory of his career entirely.

In 2021, he was selected for the South African under-20 team to compete in the International Series in Stellenbosch – a COVID-induced replacement for the cancelled Junior World Championship. He then made a try-scoring Currie Cup debut for the Blue Bulls against Western Province in the second round of the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division.

Bulls Success and Professional Growth

Moodie quickly established himself as a starter for the Bulls during their inaugural United Rugby Championship season under coach Jake White. The team made an impressive run to the championship playoffs, finishing as runners-up. He has scored 12 tries in 26 matches for the Bulls in the URC and Champions Cup, showcasing the consistency and clinical finishing that would catch the attention of national selectors.

International Recognition

The transition from provincial to international rugby happened with breathtaking speed. In August 2022, Moodie was included in the Springboks touring squad for away matches against Australia in the Rugby Championship. In his Test debut against Australia in Sydney, he scored a try in the 38th minute.

At the time of his debut, he became the second youngest player ever to win a senior cap for South Africa. Remarkably, Moodie has never lost a Test match, having started 13 of his 14 Tests with an unblemished record.

Physical Attributes and Playing Style

Standing at 1.91 meters tall (6 ft 3 in) and weighing 94 kg (207 lbs), Moodie possesses the ideal physical profile for modern rugby. His regular position is wing, though he has shown remarkable versatility by also playing at centre and fullback.

When discussing his development, Moodie has highlighted improvements in his ability to beat players one-on-one, giving him more confidence to take on defenders and break the line. He has also worked extensively on his high ball skills and tackling technique.

Versatility and Positional Evolution

One of Moodie’s most impressive attributes is his positional versatility. He has started five Tests in the No. 13 jersey (outside centre) and eight wearing No. 14 (wing). Following an injury to Lukhanyo Am, the Springbok coaching staff tested him at outside centre, with assistant coach Mzwandile Stick expressing confidence that the position switch could make him an even better player.

Recent Achievements and Future Prospects

In the recent July 2025 Test window, Moodie impressed particularly in matches against Italy and Georgia, scoring two wonderful tries and showcasing his commitment on defense, his chasing of every cause, and his determination and intensity. These performances further solidified his reputation as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents.

With four tries in eight senior internationals for South Africa, including three in his past two outings as of 2023, Moodie has consistently delivered when given opportunities at the highest level.

Life Beyond Rugby

Despite his professional commitments, Moodie maintains strong connections to his roots in Paarl, often visiting family there. He enjoys activities like padel and go-karting during his downtime. Travel has become a significant part of his life as a professional rugby player, with highlights including time spent in France during the World Cup and vacation trips to Bali.

The Road Ahead

Described as “an exceptionally talented backline player who has risen rapidly through the ranks of South African rugby and is a true star of the future”, Moodie represents the new generation of Springbok talent. His combination of physical attributes, positional versatility, and proven ability to perform on the biggest stages makes him a cornerstone of South Africa’s rugby future.

From an “average” schoolboy player to one of international rugby’s most exciting prospects, Canan Moodie’s journey exemplifies the potential that can be unlocked through dedication, opportunity, and unwavering commitment to improvement. As he continues to develop his game and gain experience at the highest level, rugby fans can expect to see much more from this remarkable young talent in the years to come.
