What is the CSA One Day Cup?

The CSA One Day Cup or the Momentum One Day Cup is the premier List A domestic tournament of South Africa. It is played in the One Day International format and has been held since 1981. Currently, most of these matches are scheduled as day-night fixtures to draw in more crowd attention.

The structure of the tournament has varied since the event began due to the constant change in the number of participating teams. These teams represent the various geographical provinces of South Africa. The current format was introduced in 2020.

A total of 59 matches are played. 16 teams feature in the tournament which are split into two divisions of eight teams each. The South Africa Emerging Players team is the only one that does not represent a geographical province. To promote diversity, Cricket South Africa has made it mandatory for each team to have six players of color, of which three must be black Africans. If this on-field criteria is not met, teams can suffer monetary sanctions and a huge deduction of five points.

In each division, one team plays the other in a round-robin format. A win is worth four points and no points are awarded for a loss. If a match is abandoned, tied, or has no result, then two points are awarded to each side. An additional bonus point is won by the team who achieves a run-rate of 1.25 times more than the opposition.

At the end of the league stage, if two teams have the same number of points, then the better team is decided based on a priority criteria. First, the number of wins is considered. If that number is the same, then the head-to-head record of the two teams is considered. If that too is equal, then the team with more bonus points is preferred. Finally, if even the bonus points are same, then the net run-rate is considered as the tiebreaker.

In Division One, at the end of the league stage, the table toppers progress to the final. The second and third positioned teams contest the eliminator, the winner of which becomes the second finalist. The winner of Division One becomes the champions of the CSA One Day Cup for that year. In Division Two, at the end of the league stage, the top two teams contest the final and no eliminator is held. The winner of Division Two is promoted to Division One the following year, whereas the team that finishes last in Division One is relegated to Division Two.

As of 2025, the following provincial teams participate in the event. Boland, South Western District, and Western Province represent Western Cape. Warriors and Border represent Eastern Cape. Titans, Lions, and Easterns represent Gauteng. Kwazulu-Natal has two teams, an inland side, and another called Dolphins. The other teams are Knights (Free State), North West Dragons (North West), Limpopo (Limpopo), Mpumalanga (Mpumalanga).

Western Province is the most successful side having won six titles. Ever since the CSA One Day Cup returned back to its traditional provincial system in 2022, Dewald Brevis has been the highest run-scorer in the post-franchise era with a tally of 917 runs in 21 matches. Kervin Mungroo is the leading wicket-taker with 32 wickets in 21 matches.
