What is the format of the Women’s European Cricket Championship?

The Women’s European Cricket Championship is a tournament played in the T10 format that has been seeing progressive growth ever since its first edition held in 2023. The first edition saw the participation of only five teams. This number rose to 10 teams in 2024, and will now feature 15 teams in 2025.

Owing to the increase in participation the tournament’s format changed each year. The first edition saw each team play the other in a round-robin format, followed by the playoffs stage. In the second edition, the teams were split into two groups – Challenger and Premier. A winner was announced in each group after each team of their respective group played the other in a round-robin format. Each division also had a playoffs stage after the round-robin matches to decide the winner. The winner of the challenger division would progress to the premier division for the following edition, whereas the team that finished last in the Premier division would be relegated to the Challenger division.

However, the two-division system expanded to a three-division system in 2025 as five more teams were added. A new group, called Emerging made the lower-most tier. The round-robin and playoffs stage would apply to this group too. Winner of the Emerging Division would progress to the Challenger Division, whereas the last positioned team of the Challenger Division would be demoted to the Emerging Division. The winner of the Premier Division is declared as the winner of the European Women’s Cricket Championship for that year.

Each team in the league stage sees a team earn three points for a win, and no points are deducted for a loss. Each team is awarded one point each for a match with no result. A team gets two bonus points if they are able to score at a rate of 1.25 times more than their opponent.

Dubbed as the Euros of Cricket, the Women’s European Cricket Championship is not officially recognized by the International Cricket Council. The winners of the first two editions of this event have been England. In 2025, the following teams will participate in the competition:

Emerging: Czechia, Malta, Greece, Croatia, Sweden
Challenger: Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, Cyprus
Premier: England, Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Jersey
