A familiar face in the SUV market:

THE Grand Vitara remains is the big boy of Suzuki’s SUV line-up, kept company by the smaller Jimny.

While Suzuki is responsible for impressive models like the Swift and Kizashi, SUVs and small off-roaders are usually what one associates with the brand first.

Despite having been around for some time now, it still manages to look modern – we suppose that boxy, square and rugged never goes out of fashion when it comes to 4×4 design.

One of the main points touted by the Grand Vitara, is that it’s equipped with authentic, off-road mechanical kit – there’s low range mode and a differential that can be locked.

Being rugged, and having to rough it over harsh terrain is in its nature, but this doesn’t mean that comfort features are lacking on the inside. It’s got quite a generous list: climate control, a 7-speaker audio system, electric windows, a steering wheel clad in leather and a keyless-go system. The usual array of safety features are there – anti-lock brakes, airbags all-round – front, side and curtain, as well as Isofix rear child seat anchors.

In the engine bay you will find a 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder engine. This delivers 122 kW and 225 Nm to all four of the Suzuki’s wheels. It’s available with a five-speed manual transmission, and you can also have it with a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Expect to pay around R331 900for the manual and R346 900 for the automatic. As with most of Suzuki’s other products, a confidence-inspiring warranty, service-plan and roadside assistance programme has also been thrown into the mix.
