AFCON LOC launches 100 days and Mascot competition

THE 29th Edition of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013 is fast drawing to a close.

Tomorrow (October 10), will mark 100 Days to go to the kick of the tournament on January 19.  The Local Organising Committee, together with the respective host cities, has planned a series of activities in Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

The event, whose main focus is to sensitize the public that there is only 100 days to go till the tournament, will also be marked by a call for public participation in choosing a Mascot for AFCON 2013.  The Dept of Sports and Recreation South Africa ran a schools competition for the design of an appropriate Mascot for the tournament. Three designs have been shortlisted from which the public will now be invited to choose the best Mascot.

The unveiling of the 100 Days Countdown clock in each city will also be followed by the unveiling of the three variations of the Mascot to the public as well as the launch of the Mascot competition with huge incentives for the lucky member of the public who chose the ultimate Mascot for AFCON 2013.

The LOC Board will deploy most of its board members to the 5 host cities on Wednesday for what the Board Chairperson calls, “an important milestone towards the preparations and plans for the hosting of AFCON 2013.  We are calling upon all South Africans and Africans in the diaspora to come out in numbers as we mark this 100 Days till the tournament. We call upon all soccer loving Africans to help us choose a Mascot that will best reflect the nature and character of this soccer tournament”, said Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, LOC Chairperson.

The 29th Edition of The Orange Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013 will kick off on January 19-February 10 and 16 Nations will be drawn against on October 24 to go to battle for the ultimate coveted trophy and to be crowned the African Champions at the end of the Tournament.
