Another Springbok Star Faces Lengthy Injury Absence

Another Springbok Star Set for Lengthy Injury Absence

The Springboks continue to suffer from injury setbacks as another key forward has reportedly undergone surgery.

On the eve of the opening Test of 2024, the World Cup-winning Springboks are already dealing with a significant injury list.

As many as nine players have been officially ruled out of both this Saturday’s clash against Wales and the highly anticipated first Test against Ireland.

It’s now reported – according to the Afrikaans publication Rapport – that Lood de Jager has undergone surgery for a shoulder injury and will be out of action for at least two months.

As a result, he could miss at least the start of the Rugby Championship in addition to the mid-year Tests.

De Jager was also ruled out of the World Cup due to a heart condition. Additionally, it cannot be overlooked that 2023 Rugby World Cup-winning lock Jean Kleyn has been sidelined for an extended period after deciding to undergo knee surgery while he waits for an eye issue to clear up.

More recently, there has been concern over veteran fullback Willie le Roux, who was prematurely forced off the field in the URC semi-final against Leinster after taking a knock to the head.

WHO ARE THE OTHER INJURED SPRINGBOK PLAYERS?

  • Steven Kitshoff
  • Jean Kleyn
  • Lood de Jager
  • Jean-Luc du Preez
  • Jaden Hendrikse
  • Henco van Wyk
  • Canan Moodie
  • Damian Willemse
  • Kurt-Lee Arendse

With these players already confirmed to be unavailable for the Wales Test and the first Ireland Test due to injury, there is also an ongoing question mark over Cheslin Kolbe.

The World Cup star has only just rejoined his teammates in Pretoria and will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Bok medical staff.

The speedster suffered a knee niggle during the Japanese club season, and after consultation with the Springbok medical team on Sunday, he was released last Monday to seek a specialist opinion. Kolbe returned to camp on Wednesday afternoon to follow a rehabilitation program.

It’s hoped he might be available for selection for the opening Test of the Incoming Tour against Ireland, but it remains to be seen if all progresses according to plan.
