The 2020-21 season saw the Big Bash League introduce three new rules with the goal of increasing the run-scoring. One of these rules was called the Bash Boost which focuses on the second innings wherein the team has to chase The target set by the opposition in the first innings.
This rule was implemented at the end of the 10th over of the team batting second. If this chasing side would have scored more runs after 10 overs of their innings compared to what the opposition had scored during their innings, then the chasing side would get one bonus points at the end of the match. This was the “Bash Boost” point. Should the chasing side win the match, they would earn four points, three for winning the match, and one from the Bash Boost.
While the rule seemed to add thrill to the run chase, a discrepancy was soon noted by statisticians and cricket pundits. Such flawed were the points table that the Bash Boost system lasted only two seasons. The first discrepancy was noted by a Cricbuzz report which stated that the top three teams at the end of the league phase would have had the same number of points as the bottom two teams had the Bash Boost points not been there.
Moreover, a second reason cited in the same report was the attitude of teams towards the Bash Boost system wherein the teams often felt that earning a boost point was as important as a win. Additionally, the team chasing could have earned a Bash Boost point and lost a match. This was considered unfair as the basic points system did not award any point to the losing side.
These loopholes were accepted by the organization bodies, which forced them to revert to the conventional format. The points system since the 2022-23 season has thus been three points for a win, one point for a tie or no result, and zero for a win.
Thus, taking into consideration these loopholes, the idea of Bash Boost points was scrapped off by the 2022-23 season. The traditional system of 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie/no result and 0 for losses was reverted back starting in the 2022-23 season.
