Bestmed Tuks Race: Biggest In Gauteng

THE anticipated field of over 13 000 runners in the 2013 Bestmed Tuks Race places the event as the biggest of its kind in Gauteng. Runners from across South Africa will participate in the event on 16 February 2013 and there has been keen interest from Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes.

The Bestmed Tuks Race that starts and finishes at the University of Pretoria’s (Tuks) LC De Villiers Sports Grounds, is open to all and each year draws participation from the cream of South Africa’s elite athletes, as well as social runners. The event comprises a choice of 21km, 10 km, 5km and 1 km race distances, as well as a 10km wheelchair event that will be taking place for the second time this year.

“This is an event that grows in popularity and stature each year and we are very excited to welcome a number of athletes from beyond South Africa’s borders as participants in the upcoming race,” comments Alan Fritz, Executive Head: Sales, Marketing and Distribution at Bestmed.

“From its humble beginnings in 2000 the Tuks Race has grown to become one of the most important annual events in the Tuks sporting diary,” says Professor Gloudien Spies, Chairperson of Tuks Marathon Clubs.

This year, the 21km and 10km races promise to be even more competitive as the bar has been set high in previous years.

The Bestmed Tuks Race follows the recent Bestmed Eersterust Marathon, one of Bestmed’s community development initiatives that took place on 19 January 2013.

Athletes can pre-enter at different sport shops in Pretoria, Wannabee sport shop on the UP campus, on the day of the race and online entries can be submitted on www.entrytime.com  or www.sa-active.com  until 14 February 2013.-www.runnersworld.co.za
