ABSA Cape Epic signs has signed a major new sponsorship deal with Telkom Business and offers first live broadcast

The Absa Cape Epic presented by adidas, the most televised mountain bike stage race in the world, has secured Telkom Business as partner of the prestigious event as well as live broadcasts of racing on the first and last day on SuperSport.

Says Kevin Vermaak, founder and director of the Absa Cape Epic: “We’re honoured and delighted to have Telkom Business on board. The race has increased dramatically in size over the last few years, as have our media requirements. The perfect communications partner is vital to the success of the event and to have Telkom Business on board, allows us to service all the journalists, both on the event and at their various offices worldwide.”

Brian Armstrong, Senior Managing Executive of Telkom Business, adds: “We’re excited by our association with the Absa Cape Epic, a world class event, and intend to help make it the most enjoyed mountain bike race in the world – for the spectators, the media, the crew and the participants. Telkom Business believes in partnership – we work with our customers to deliver success in their operations and we’ll do the same with the Absa Cape Epic team.”

Vermaak continues: “We’re also thrilled with the announcement that the prologue as well as the final stage of the race will be broadcast live for the first time in its history on SuperSport, which has backed the Absa Cape Epic since its inception.” Although the event will only be broadcast live on the African continent this year, plans are already underway to do so worldwide in 2012. “We believe the live broadcasts will make it accessible to all those interested in following the race and hopefully it will be broadcast live internationally by 2012. We’re extremely proud of this new development and will be working with a top production team with experience in international live golf broadcasts.”

Vermaak concludes: “Our event has grown in popularity and is increasingly becoming an iconic endurance event. UCI President Pat McQuaid deems the Absa Cape Epic’s promotion of cycling on a continental level as an absolutely vital part of the UCI’s strategy to globalise the sport. We’re confident that the move to broadcast live will aid the UCI’s strategy.”
