The 36-year-old, known for his skill as a Proteas Test batter, will conclude his international journey following the Betway Test series against India. Elgar’s final appearances will be at two Test matches, the first at SuperSport Park in Centurion, his home ground, from December 26 to 30, and the second at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, where he scored his first Test runs, from January 3 to 7.
Since debuting in Tests against Australia in 2012, Elgar has amassed over 5,000 runs at an average of 37.28. His career highlights include 13 centuries and a personal best of 199 against Bangladesh in 2017.
Elgar’s tenacity and performance with the bat led to his appointment as Test captain from May 2021 to January 2023. Under his leadership, South Africa achieved third place in the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship, highlighted by a memorable 2-1 series victory over India at home in January 2022.
Reflecting on his career, Elgar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country and the experiences gained throughout his journey. He noted the upcoming Cape Town Test as his final match, marking the end of a fulfilling career in a venue he holds dear.
Enoch Nkwe, Director of Cricket, praised Elgar for his unique, old-school cricket style, emphasizing his ability to face challenges head-on and lead the team in crucial moments. Nkwe acknowledged Elgar’s significant contribution to the game and thanked him for the lasting memories he created.
