Eben Etzebeth Stands Tall as the Greatest Springbok of All Time

Eben Etzebeth Set to Dethrone Victor Matfield as Most-Capped Springbok Ever

The indomitable Eben Etzebeth is poised to surpass Victor Matfield as the most-capped Springbok of all time this Saturday, 28 September, when South Africa takes on Argentina in Nelspruit.

Etzebeth equaled Matfield’s longstanding record of 127 Springbok Test caps last weekend, coming off the bench against Los Pumas in Santiago, Argentina. However, with his inclusion in the starting lineup for the return match in Mbombela, the towering lock will officially break the record, making his 128th appearance in the iconic green and gold jersey.

At just 33 years old (he turns 33 on October 29), Etzebeth is set to further extend his record. With three more Tests remaining after the Rugby Championship, the Springbok stalwart could conclude the 2024 season with 131 Test caps, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest Springboks in history.

Rassie Erasmus Praises Eben Etzebeth’s Milestone Achievement
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus expressed admiration for Etzebeth’s remarkable accomplishment, praising the lock’s influence and dedication.

“As a former Springbok, I know what a monumental achievement it is for Eben to become the most-capped Springbok ever. We are all incredibly proud of him, and we want to make this a special, memorable occasion,” Erasmus said.

He added, “If we can win the title and finish the competition with a victory, it would be a huge moment for the team and Eben as an individual. We’ll give everything to make this a special day for him.”
