Etzebeth Shines in Sharks’ Opening Victory in Challenge Cup

Eben Etzebeth delivered a stellar performance, earning the man-of-the-match title as the Sharks triumphed over Pau with a 45-5 victory in their Challenge Cup opener.

The Sharks, undeterred by a 15-minute weather delay, immediately established their dominance, pressing to break Pau’s defensive line. Their aggressive approach soon paid off when Pau was penalized for a foul, allowing Curwin Bosch to kick for touch, intensifying the pressure on Pau in their own territory.

Etzebeth expertly handled the line-out, leading to another penalty against Pau. Despite a brief loss of possession, the Sharks quickly regained their momentum. Ox Nche’s powerful run set up captain Lukhanyo Am, who dashed through for the first try, just as the rain started.

Pau attempted a comeback with a scrum near the Sharks’ goalposts. They briefly threatened to score through Gregoire Arfeuil, but Bosch’s strategic play kept the Sharks ahead 7-5.

The Sharks then extended their lead with Am’s second try and a Bosch penalty goal, making it 17-5. They maintained control, exploiting scoring opportunities despite the challenging weather.

Etzebeth’s prowess was on full display as he scored just before halftime, pushing the Sharks’ lead to 24-5. Marnus Potgieter added the bonus point try, with an assist from Am, and Etzebeth scored again, confirmed by a TMO ruling.

Makazole Mapimpi later scored, receiving an excellent pass from Nche, highlighting the Sharks’ dominance. After an hour of play, the Sharks had tallied five tries, commanding the game despite the adverse weather. In contrast, Pau, with a youthful lineup including five 19-year-olds, struggled to gain traction.
