To understand what it means to be an X-factor player, one can look at Deon Fourie, the Springbok and Stormers star.
Jake White, a former Springbok coach, has praised Deon Fourie as a prime example of an X-factor player.
EX-SPRINGBOK COACH DESCRIBES AN X-FACTOR PLAYER
White commended Fourie for his crucial role in the Stormers’ victory over his Bulls team, saying Fourie displayed characteristics that define an X-factor player.
“X-Factor isn’t just about wearing No.10 or No.15 and running with fancy footwork,” White explained, as reported by Rugby365. “It’s about being smart in avoiding breakdowns, ensuring ball retention when carrying, and showing the body language of a winner. These are also aspects of the X-Factor, not just having another backline player who can sidestep.”
Highlighting Fourie’s performance, White noted, “He may not be a sidestepper, but he excels in what he does, and that’s his X-Factor.”
Fourie himself believed that matching the Bulls in physicality was crucial to their 26-20 URC win.
TURNING CAPE TOWN INTO A FORTRESS
The Stormers veteran aims to make the DHL Stadium a formidable venue. He acknowledged the support of the large crowd in contributing to this goal.
“Matching their physicality is half the battle won,” said Fourie. “We aim to make this stadium in Cape Town a special place where people enjoy rugby and the city itself. Though Newlands will always hold its charm, we’re creating something unique here too.”
Despite the excitement, Stormers coach John Dobson labeled the team’s performance as average.
Reflecting on the recent match, Dobson remarked, “This Saturday’s game was tough, but defeating a formidable team like Stade Rochelais last week was a significant achievement, albeit underappreciated. However, today’s performance was just par for the Stormers.”
