Several players have enhanced their reputations for the Springboks this season, and Jaden Hendrikse is certainly one of the standout success stories. Over the course of the 2024 Test season, the Springbok coaching staff have received clear answers to some of the key questions that had lingered before the start of the campaign.
One of the biggest uncertainties at the outset of the Rugby Championship centered around the scrumhalf position, especially after Faf de Klerk’s serious injury. With De Klerk nearing 33, it provided an opportunity for the Springboks to explore their depth at No. 9. While De Klerk’s presence was missed at times, it also allowed other players to step up.
Rassie Erasmus, the Springbok coach, rotated his options between Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams, and Morne van den Berg, but a pivotal moment came when Jaden Hendrikse returned to full fitness during the Rugby Championship.
Having missed the start of the season due to injury, Hendrikse made his comeback off the bench against New Zealand in Cape Town and again in Argentina, gradually finding his rhythm. But it was in the final match of the Rugby Championship against the Pumas where he truly made his mark. Starting the game, Hendrikse’s pace at the breakdown, sharp distribution, and accurate kicking added a new level of dynamism to the Springbok attack.
What further played to Hendrikse’s advantage was being handed the goal-kicking responsibilities, easing the pressure on flyhalf Manie Libbok. Hendrikse delivered early on, nailing his first three kicks before his accuracy slightly waned. Still, his ability to handle the kicking duties strengthens his case for retaining the No. 9 jersey, especially if the Springboks decide to continue with Libbok at 10.
Looking back, it’s been a remarkable turnaround for the 24-year-old Hendrikse, who began the season on the sidelines. Now, he has firmly positioned himself as the first-choice scrumhalf, proving his value at a critical time for the Springboks.
