Handre Pollard Reflects on THAT World Cup Penalty: The Greatest Kick of My Career!

Flyhalf Handre Pollard has described his match-winning penalty kick in the World Cup semi-finals as a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

Pollard, instrumental throughout the World Cup playoffs, maintained a perfect goal-kicking record, notably securing victory against England in the semi-finals with a long-range kick from near the halfway line. This kick was pivotal in staging one of the most remarkable comebacks in Springbok history, overcoming a nine-point deficit in the last 10 minutes, leading them to the final, which they ultimately won.

Pollard remarked that he could attempt “another 1000 kicks” but doubts he could ever replicate such a flawless strike. Speaking with former Scotland lock Jim Hamilton, he expressed his excitement about these high-pressure moments. “I love those moments. It’s the most alive you feel on a rugby field,” Pollard said. He recalled thinking, during that seminal kick, how incredible it would be if it succeeded – a thought he had never experienced before. “It was the best strike of my life,” he stated.

POLLARD PRAISES TEAM’S RESILIENT LEGACY
Pollard also commended the relentless spirit of the World Cup-winning squad, noting their unwavering determination and ability to overcome any challenge. “The scoreline in the three World Cup playoffs tells a story, but it’s more than that. Over the past six years, we’ve been continuously battling. It’s a legacy we should be proud of,” he added.

CELEBRATIONS OF A LIFETIME
Following their World Cup triumph, the Springboks engaged in extended celebrations, including an extensive trophy tour. Pollard, reflecting on the week, hinted at the intensity of the festivities. “The first few days were the best, just the team together at the hotel, before the chaos started upon returning to South Africa,” he shared.

He mentioned the lack of sleep and the high spirits within the team, singling out Damian Willemse and Cheslin Kolbe for their exceptional stamina in celebrations. “As soon as one person tires, another steps up to keep the party going. It was unbelievable,” Pollard recalled.
