How Significantly Will the Springboks Feel the Absence of Felix Jones?

Despite strengthening their coaching ranks, the Springboks’ loss of Felix Jones is undeniably a significant setback.

The importance of Felix Jones’ role within the Springboks was highlighted in the second episode of the “Chasing the Sun 2” documentary, providing valuable insights into the team’s strategy.

Although Jones, at 36, may seem relatively new to coaching, his expertise was immediately recognized during his time under Rassie Erasmus at Munster.

Erasmus, upon returning to South Africa in 2018, swiftly integrated Jones into the Springboks’ management team, where he quickly established himself as a key figure and beloved coach.

Jones, praised for his exceptional ‘rugby brain’, introduced expert analysis and a fresh perspective to the Springboks’ preparations, particularly evident during last year’s World Cup.

In one instance from “Chasing the Sun 2”, Jones shares how diving deep into YouTube led him to uncover remarkable insights before the pivotal quarter-final against France.

The impact of Jones’ departure to join the England national team post-World Cup was universally acknowledged on social media, highlighting the void his exit creates for the Springboks. Before his move, Jones credited Erasmus for significantly influencing his career, having contributed to South Africa’s two World Cup victories.

Assuming the role of England’s defence coach, Jones reflected on his journey and the mentors, such as Erasmus, Anthony Foley, and Joe Schmidt, who shaped his coaching philosophy. He noted the openness within the coaching community and the importance of learning from each other while acknowledging that not all strategies are interchangeable among teams due to their unique playing styles.

With Jones’ departure, the Springboks have enriched their coaching staff with the addition of international coaches Tony Brown and Jerry Flannery, and the innovative appointment of former referee Jaco Peyper as Laws and Discipline Advisor.
