Stormers standout Deon Fourie was notably absent from the Springboks’ initial camp, yet there’s a strong possibility he might be included later.
Deon Fourie emerged as an unexpected hero for the Springboks during the 2023 RWC, completing an incredible journey to clinch World Cup success.
Upon his return to the Stormers in 2021, Fourie never envisioned a Springboks call-up. Yet, by July 2022, he made his debut against Wales at 35, becoming the oldest newcomer to the team.
Subsequently, Fourie consistently figured in the Springboks’ strategy, coming off the bench five times and starting once before the World Cup.
His World Cup journey transitioned from a versatile backup forward to the primary substitute hooker following Malcolm Marx’s injury.
In the finale, Fourie unexpectedly played up to 76 minutes, stepping in for the injured Bongi Mbonambi early on and even leading the team towards the end.
However, Rassie Erasmus’s announcement on Monday of 43 players for a March alignment camp conspicuously omitted Fourie from the comprehensive roster of local talents.
This camp is the first of three preparatory sessions ahead of the international season, leaving room for Fourie’s potential inclusion later.
Given that Fourie will be 41 by the next World Cup, the Springboks’ coaching staff might be inclined to explore younger options. Nonetheless, Fourie’s current domestic form suggests he still has much to offer.
The Springboks would benefit from Fourie’s extensive knowledge and experience, particularly to mentor the upcoming generation. Therefore, his reintegration into the team, especially amid injuries to seasoned hookers like Malcolm Marx or Bongi Mbonambi, would hardly be surprising later this year.
