Jonty Rhodes, Proteas Icon, Motivates Young Cricketers

Proteas cricket legend Jonty Rhodes is using his influence to support the Cricket School of Excellence based in Cape Town.

Rhodes, who has always been deeply passionate about cricket and is renowned for his exceptional fielding skills, is dedicated to leaving a lasting impact on the sport both in South Africa and internationally.

“I still possess the same energy and enthusiasm for cricket as I always have,” Rhodes remarks. “A significant part of this involves creating memorable experiences and playing a role in instilling this passion in the upcoming generation of players.”
JONTY RHODES: A HIGHLY ADMIRED PROTEAS PLAYER
Now 54, Rhodes is a fervent fan and supporter of the Cape Town’s Cricket School of Excellence, spearheaded by Ryan Maron. The school has significantly influenced cricket development across various ages, genders, and skill levels, and is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary.

“Ryan and I have a long history, and I am immensely proud of his work in transforming lives through cricket. He has dedicated 25 years to sharing his knowledge, and I want him to feel proud of this remarkable milestone,” Rhodes adds.
Maron, a former professional player, has gained extensive experience in the sport, having coached international teams such as the West Indies and Afghanistan.

“It’s certainly been an adventure, but incredibly rewarding, particularly seeing many players continue at club and international levels. Just recently, David Bedingham was inducted into the Proteas,” notes Maron.

Bedingham is among the many who have progressed to international cricket after starting in one of Ryan Maron’s cricket groups.

“Beyond these international stars, we’ve seen hundreds of kids join the CSE to learn about cricket and life. That, for me, is perhaps the most rewarding aspect,” Maron reflects.
CRICKET OUTREACH EFFORTS
Another shared accomplishment for Rhodes and Maron is the CSE’s Adopt A School program, supported by Tickmill, a multi-regulated Forex and CFD provider known for its awards. This initiative aims to expand cricket in Khayelitsha, offering a fun and secure environment. Highly skilled coaches from the CSE are involved in this project.

“We are lucky to have wonderful sponsors and partners like Tickmill, who have committed to ensuring the well-being of two schools. This passion project is something we hold dear and anticipate a lasting partnership,” Maron states.

Currently, 15 players from the Adopt A School program are participating in the January Holiday Clinic organized by the CSE.

The 25th-anniversary celebration will culminate on Friday, 12 January, at the Gary Kirsten Oval in Claremont. The week-long clinic has engaged nearly 200 children in various cricket skills training sessions. Jonty Rhodes is scheduled to attend, displaying some of his cricket techniques and coaching the participants.
