As the Springboks seek to bolster their depth at eighthman, England-based Juarno Augustus is undoubtedly a candidate for consideration.
At 26 years old, Juarno Augustus still possesses the advantage of youth, though many would have expected him to have earned his Springbok cap by now.
Since scoring the highest number of tries (7) at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship in 2017 and receiving the Player of the Tournament award, he has been tipped as a future Springbok.
However, his performance and fitness have been somewhat inconsistent in recent years, making it difficult for him to progress to the next level.
COULD JUARNO AUGUSTUS FINALLY BE ON THE PATH TO SPRINGBOK HONOURS?
Augustus has rejuvenated his career with Northampton Saints, contributing significantly to the team’s success at the top of the English Premiership. Just last weekend, Augustus played as No 8 when Northampton decisively defeated an under-strength Gloucester 90-0, securing a home semi-final.
With Duane Vermeulen’s retirement, as the Springboks plan for the long term at No 8, Augustus is likely beginning to appear on the national team’s radar.
Currently in excellent form, Juarno Augustus could provide a dynamic and physically imposing ball-carrying option to the Springboks’ already formidable back-row lineup.
“If I can be the best player I can be, I think I can get a foot in the door,” Augustus stated in a recent interview with Planet Rugby. “But I have had no discussions with the (South Africa) coaches. It’s about letting my rugby do the talking for me.”
THE WORLD CHAMPIONS WILL SOON BE IN ACTION
As a reminder, the Springboks will kick off their 2024 season against Wales, with a total of 13 confirmed fixtures.
