Springbok flanker Kwagga Smith has been recognized as the top performer in breakdowns for the year 2023, as per statistical data.
The 30-year-old had a standout year in 2023, contributing significantly as a substitute for the Springboks, helping them achieve consecutive Rugby World Cup titles.
Famed for his excellence in breakdowns, Smith’s effectiveness in this area was highlighted by statistics from Opta. In 2023, no player surpassed Smith in winning breakdown or jackal turnovers, considering both club and international play.
Smith secured 27 jackals for the Springboks and his club, Shizuoka Blue Revs in Japan Rugby League One, along with a remarkable 40 turnovers. A turnover might involve taking the ball from a carrier or knocking it out in a tackle, whereas a jackal is a move at the breakdown.
Leading the stats in both turnovers and jackals across major club and international contests, Smith also had the highest average per 80 minutes in these categories, with 2.8 turnovers and 1.9 jackals.
His accomplishments are particularly noteworthy given he only started two Test matches for the Springboks that year, mostly playing as a substitute.
Smith was integral to the Springboks’ strategy, especially during the Rugby World Cup knockout stages. His performance in the quarter-final against France was critical, winning two turnovers in a 30-minute appearance, including a crucial penalty that swung the game in South Africa’s favor.
In the semi-final victory over England, Smith added another turnover, and his performance peaked in the final against New Zealand, where he claimed three turnovers, including a notable one against Will Jordan, contributing to the Springboks’ fourth Rugby World Cup win.
Opta also recognized Smith as the most effective defensive ruck operator at the tournament. He disrupted or won a turnover in 13 of the 31 defensive rucks he engaged in, resulting in a 41% defensive ruck efficiency rate.
With a total of 10 turnovers, Smith outperformed all other players in this aspect.
Overall, 2023 was a remarkable year for Smith, who not only played a key role in winning the Rugby World Cup but also earned the title of Breakdown King.
