LIMPOPO Province will this year play host to a major regional final to select a South African team to participate in the 17th Amateur World Golfers Championship. The event organiser, World Golf Events SA, confirms that Limpopo Province will host a regional elimination event at Zebula Golf Estate culminating in the final leg to be held in KwaZulu-Natal Province.
World Golf Events SA spokesperson, Craig Clay-Smith, said, “Limpopo Tourism and Parks would like this to be a major event and has combined the previous plan at Legend Golf & Safari Resort into one major tournament, which will now be staged at Zebula Golf Estate. It makes good sense to combine all efforts into one major occasion, so we support the decision fully and the golfers registered are happy to transfer to one combined event.”
The CEO of LTP, Mr. Rob Tooley said, “Our pristine, world-class standard golf courses, won the hearts of inspection team members who visited various golf courses in the country. A site visit to Legend Golf and Safari and Zebula Golf Estate saw the two courses selected for hosting two regional elimination events, on the 23rd of July and the 3rd of September respectively, to cover the entire region including Mpumalanga and Pretoria. However, after consideration of the logistics involved for the province, the championship will now only have one leg in the Limpopo Province scheduled for the 3rd of September 2011 at Zebula Golf Estate, outside Bela-Bela”.
The competition will be open to any amateur golfer (male or female) over the age of 16 with an official handicap of 0 to 25. One regional winner in each handicap 0 -5; 6 -11; 11 -15; 16 – 20; 21 -25 will compete in the national finals for a team place. The first and second placed handicap divisional winners in the final will be selected. Ten best amateur golfers of the competition comprising two teams, each with five golfers, will play against 50 countries across the globe.
