Majoro brace sees Chiefs to victory

Lehlohonolo Majoro scored a brace as Kaizer Chiefs restored their four-point lead at the top of the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win over SuperSport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium last night.

Both teams came into the match with unbeaten records in the league, but aside from Kermit Erasmus’ excellent finish in the first half to equalise after Majoro’s opener, Matsatsantsa were always second best to the Amakhosi. This win certainly underlines Chiefs’ potential as serious challengers for the title, but coach Stuart Baxter will know that his team still has plenty of work to do if they are to remain ahead of reigning champions Orlando Pirates.

The match began in pouring rain and with the threat of lightning and thunder possibly suspending play, though fortunately it was allowed to continue uninterrupted.

Chiefs were the first team to settle into a rhythm and opened the scoring midway through the first half. Siphiwe Tshabalala provided a low cross from the left flank and Lehlohonolo Majoro was left unmarked, easily finding the back of the net from close range. Yet the Soweto side’s lead lasted just 10 minutes, as SuperSport levelled just after the half hour mark. A ball played across the middle of the park was whipped into the back of the net by Kermit Erasmus, who beat goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune’s right hand.

The teams exchanged periods of dominance in the remainder of the first half and the opening phase of the second, though Matsatsantsa were hit by an ankle injury to striker Atusaye Nyondo, which saw him replaced by Thabiso Nkoana.

On 65 minutes Chiefs surged back in front through another well-taken goal by Majoro. On this occasion the forward fended off the attentions of Mor Diouf to slide home a diagonal long-ball from defender Eric Mathoho.

Though United pushed hard for an equaliser late in the game, it was Chiefs who came closest to adding to the score in the 88th minute when Bernard Parker hit the post and substitute Kingston Nkhatha just missed out on the rebound.
