“Admittedly, it was a challenging decision. We aimed to post a significant score by opting to bat first,” Markram stated.
Aiden Markram, the interim captain of the Proteas, concedes that, in hindsight, he would have chosen to bowl first after his team’s eight-wicket loss to India.
The Proteas were defeated in their opening ODI match against India at the Wanderers Stadium.
After winning the toss, Markram decided to bat, but the team could only set a modest target of 116 before being dismissed.
When questioned about choosing to bat first if given another chance, Markram humorously remarked that it was not the ideal decision.
“Probably not,” Markram responded, as reported by India Today.
“Yes, it was difficult. Our goal with the initial bat was to establish a strong score. However, the Indian bowlers deserve credit for their exceptional performance.”

“We struggled to form partnerships and consistently lost wickets. From the beginning, we were on the back foot and couldn’t find a way to recover,” he added.
“It was a daytime game. The first five to six overs were somewhat challenging, which we anticipated. However, today, those conditions persisted longer than expected, and their bowling was impressive. As I’ve said, the credit goes to them for their bowling,” Markram explained.
