FROM SAFETY and Security to Sports, that is the transition Fikile Mbalula made when he was appointed by the President Jacob Zuma as the new Sports and Recreation Minister.
This cabinet reshuffle comes as Zuma’s plan to improve and speed up service delivery in the country.
The South African sports officials welcomed the decision to appoint Mbalula to lead sports department and are hoping that he will bring about drastic changes.
Even the suspended Athletics South Africa (ASA) president Leonard Chuene praised President Zuma for appointing Mbalula.
The former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) President said that he will ensure that South African is ready to compete effectively at the top level of international sports. “There is going to be lots of movement and fun. There is also going to be unity of the rainbow nation,” said the minister.
Mbalula takes over from the former Sports and Recreation minister Makhenkesi Stofile after being sacked from his portfolio.
The former deputy police minister is well known from his days as the ANCYL no nonsense and outspoken President, and he is no stranger to the South African youth.
Many believe that this was a clever move by the President since Mbalula is a youngster and most people involved in sports are the young people so they can relate to him and he will be able to engage with the youth effectively on their level.
Mbalula resumed his duties as the Sports and Recreation Minister on Monday 01 November.
