Meet South Africa’s New Siya Kolisi!

This dynamic Sharks loose forward has been dubbed Siya Kolisi 2.0 due to his similar playing style to the Springbok captain.

Phepsi Buthelezi possesses all the qualities needed to develop into an open side flank in the style of Siya Kolisi, according to Sharks veteran coach John Plumtree.

Plumtree highlighted this after choosing Buthelezi, one of the most versatile forwards at the Sharks, to play at No. 6 for their United Rugby Championship match against the Scarlets this week.

This unconventional selection follows Buthelezi’s predominant roles at No. 8 and blindside flank for the Sharks in all competitions since his senior debut in 2019.

SIYA KOLISI 2.0 IS SET TO SOAR
Explaining his decision to pick the 24-year-old at No. 6, Plumtree noted that Buthelezi shares similar traits with Siya Kolisi, making him an effective and world-class back rower.

“I think Phepsi could develop into a pretty good six, similar to the Siya Kolisi mold. He’s quite relentless around the field, so he maintains a good work rate,” he told reporters.

“He’ll need to improve and get better at poaching the ball and turning over possession, but he’s also a viable lineout option.

“Phepsi has had a strong season and he’s proven to be quite resilient with the number of games he has played. I’m not saying he’s going to cover six, seven, and eight, but I’d certainly like him to be able to play both positions,” Plumtree added.

If you want to see South Africa’s new Siya Kolisi in action, catch the Sharks’ game against the Scarlets, which kicks off at 8:35 pm on Friday night.
