What is the men’s Caribbean Premier League?

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is one of the three oldest T20 leagues. It was first held in 2013 and replaced the Stanford 20/20 which was terminated due to sponsorship reasons. The Caribbean Premier League is managed by Cricket West Indies.

It was in 2021 when the current format of the tournament was first executed. Similar to the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League, teams face each other in a round-robin format. Three of the ten league matches that each team plays are home matches.

A win is worth two points, a loss is worth zero, and one point is given to each team if the match ends without a result. If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the net run-rate decides the better side. The fielding team can also get a penalty if they fail to keep up with the allotted time within which they are supposed to finish a few overs. If a team is one over behind the expected time, then 0.05 points are deducted from their net run-rate. Every subsequent over down has a penalty weight of 0.10.

As of 2025, the participating teams are Trinbago Knight Riders, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Royals, Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, and Saint Lucia Kings.

The winner of the tournament gets a prize money of USD 1 million. They are also given the winning cup, called the Roots Trophy. Trinbago Knight Riders is the most successful team with four titles. The next best side is the Jamaica Tallawahs with three titles. Despite reaching a record six finals in the Caribbean Premier League, the Guyana Amazon Warriors have only won one title. Johnson Charles is leading run-scorer of the tournament with over 3300 runs. Dwayne Bravo’s count of 129 wickets is the highest by any bowler in the Caribbean Premier League.
