Knowledge “Power” Musona has extended his contract with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs by a year.
Chiefs, who in recent years have showed reluctance to release its players to overseas clubs, are believed to have upped Musona’s income and commitment to Amakhosi, to thwart interest from overseas.
The 20-year-old Zimbawean striker is without a doubt the hottest player in the South African Premier League, for which he is the top scorer with nine goals from 14 matches.
Musona’s initial contract with “Amakhosi” was for three years, effective from 2009/2010 season. Contents of contracts are usual kept as top secret in SA football, and that applies to Musona’s improved package.
The lanky youngster has emerged as the club’s trump-card in its quest to capture the league championship again, since the club’s back to back titles in 2004 and 2005.
So far his superlative performance in front of goals has helped extend Chiefs reputation as the cup kings of SA football. The league title is within sight, as Chiefs are just four points off the pace being set by rivals Mamelodi Sundowns. There 16 rounds of fixtures to play before the championships comes to an end in May 2011.
Meanwhile, the super-confident is known to be extremely happy at Chiefs. The biggest club in SA sported him in Kimberley, the Northern Cape capital, where he was doing duty for Zimbabwe during a COSAFA Under-20 championship in 2008.
Though SA eliminated Zimbabwe in the semis, Musona was good enough to finish as the tournament’s top scorer. At the time the talented striker was not even known in Zimbabwe, as he was attached to a youth academy called Aces Youth Soccer Academy in Harare. He made his debut for the Zimbabwe senior team the same season he made his Premier League debut. That match was ironically against Bafana Bafana, a pre-2010 World Cup friendly played in Durban.
So far Musona’s form and ability to execute basic skills with ease do not only speak volumes about his talent but say a lot about the shortcomings of development structures in SA. By Tumo Mokone
