FOR the first time since the inception of the Nedbank Cup, the final of this prestigious tournament will be played outside of the Gauteng.
This was confirmed by the PSL at a media function last night that Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium will stage the final where the winner of this event will walk away with R6 Million as well as a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup.
“We extremely pleased and excited by our choice of venue for the final,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem.
“We went out to tender and received very good bids from municipalities around the country, but in the end, the bid received from the Mbombela Municipality was impressive and got the nod.”
During last year’s FIFA Soccer World Cup, Mbombela staged four matches and lately the stadium has also hosted a number of PSL matches, breaking records in the process.
The recent match between BidVest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs attracted 41 222 spectators exceeding the record set during the World Cup by 7 508 spectators.
“Since its inception the Nedbank Cup has had a strong developmental focus. By taking the 2011 final to Mbombela we are extending the reach of this prestigious event and exposing the people of Mpumalanga to the magic of the Nedbank Cup,” says Andy Scott, head of Nedbank Group Sponsorships.
Executive Mayor of Mbombela, the honourable Lassy Chiwayo, also expressed his excitement at the venue for the Nedbank Cup Final.
“Following the hosting of four successful World Cup matches at Mbombela Stadium last year we look forward to hosting a match of this magnitude,” said Chiwayo.
“We welcome all soccer fans with open arms to our wonderful venue and I can assure you that we are going all out to make this a momentous occasion.”
The final will take place on May 28
