What is the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in cricket?

Narendra Kumar Prasadrao Salve (NKP Salve) was the former chairman of Board of Control for Cricket in India in the late 1980s. He was an Indian politician and administrator who was instrumental in bringing the World Cup to the Indian subcontinent. This led to a massive growth of the sport in South Asia and was a popularity booster since India’s 1983 World Cup win. In 1993, to honor NKP Salve the BCCI commenced a domestic List A competition.

The tournament features three teams, each consisting of 12 players. The players in each squad were a mix of veterans and emerging talents who could potentially feature in the national side. These teams were named India A, India B, and India Seniors. The teams were renamed India Blue, India Red, and India Green in 2006. In the 2012 and 2013 editions, a side from Delhi and Bengal also participated in the tournament.

The tournament followed a 50-over format as seen in an One-Day International (ODI) match. A round-robin format was followed for the event where each team played the other once. A teams gets four points for a win and no points are deducted for a loss. In case a match is drawn or ends in a tie, each team for one point. The top two teams at the end of the league stage contest the final.

The 2011 edition of the tournament recorded the only instance of a final ending in a tie. India Red and India Green were the joint winners for scoring 238 runs each.

The tournament was discontinued after 2013 to pave way for more domestic tournaments in both the One Day International and T20 formats. The India Seniors side has won the tournament a record seven times.
