Cricket is a global sport. The sport is governed by the International Cricket Council. Based on the infrastructure of the cricket in a particular country, nations get either a test-playing status or an associate or affiliate status from the International Cricket Council. Outside of the multi-nation events like the World Cups, Champions Trophy, World Test Championship, and continental tournaments like the Asia Cup or European Cricket Championships, cricket matches are often held between two countries as a bilateral series.
The bilateral series usually seen one team touring the other. These series fought between two nations result in the winner getting a perpetual trophy. A tour usually consists of a test series, a One Day International series, and a T20 series. In each discipline three to five matches are held. With the advent of T20, oftentimes the test series is decided by a one-off test match. Unless specified, the bilateral series are usually played in the home and away format.
The Ashes is the most notable perpetual trophy. It has been played between Australia and England since the 1882-83 season. England’s tour to India is called the Anthony de Mello trophy whereas India’s Tour to England is the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (formerly the Pataudi Trophy).
Australia and West Indies have contested for the Frank Worrell trophy since 1960. The Trans-Tasman trophy is test-series played between Australia and New Zealand since 1985. The limited overs series played between the same two countries is the Chappell-Hadlee trophy. Starting in 1996, Australia and India have faced each other for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Some other notable perpetual trophies include Warne-Muralitharan Trophy (between Australia and Sri Lanka), the Freedom Trophy (between India and South Africa), Sobers-Tissera Trophy (between West Indies and Sri Lanka), the Richards-Botham Trophy (between England and West Indies; formerly known as Wisden Trophy), the Southern Cross Trophy (between Australia and Zimbabwe), the Clive Lloyd Trophy (between West Indies and Zimbabwe), the Tangiwai Shield (between New Zealand and South Africa), the Basil d’Oliveira Trophy (between England and South Africa) and the Benaud-Qadir trophy (between Australia and Pakistan).
