IT was the afternoon of mixed feelings in the country’s football fraternity as the curtain of the Absa Premiership went down with Orlando Pirates as the biggest winners.
The mighty Buccaneers capped their glories season with a resounding 4-2 victory over Golden Arrows at the packed Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, the victory which saw them successfully defended their league title with 58 points. Benny McCarthy scoring a brace while the other two goals came from Siyabonga Sangweni and captain Lucky Lekgwathi with Dillion Sheppard and Katlego Mashego scoring the consolation goals for Arrows..
Pirates’ victory over Arrows who were earlier in the first half reduced to ten men shattered Moroka Swallows’ first-ever league title dream who hot on their heels in the title race. Swallows who are Pirates’ cross-township neighbours though finished on high note after a 1-0 victory away to Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium to finish on the second position with 56 points.
This is Pirates’ third silver-ware in their cabinet after having lifted the MTN 8, the Telkom Knockout Cup and the league. Last season under Ruud Krol, the Soweto giants won the MTN 8, the Nedbank Cup and the league title.
In the other results, Kaizer Chiefs wrapped their league season on a sad note after playing to a goalless draw against AmaZulu in the match that was played in front of a disappointing crowd at the FNB Stadium. The results saw the mighty Amakhosi finished the league season on the fifth position with 50 points.
Meanwhile the Tshwane clubs, SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns registered 2-1 and 1-0 victories over Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars respectively. The outcome saw Matsatsantsa A Pitori wrapped the season on the third position with 52 points while the Brazilians finished fourth with 50 points.
The rest of the results are: Platinum Stars 0 v Free State Stars 2, Santos 1 v Jomo Cosmos 0 and Black Leopards 3 v Ajax Cape Town 1.
