Player Ratings: Stylish Damian Leads Springboks to Freedom Cup Victory

Damian de Allende was a man on a mission in the Springboks’ narrow six-point victory over the All Blacks at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

The Springboks secured a 2-0 series win in the Rugby Championship against their long-time rivals, the All Blacks, in the Mother City. Here are our player ratings.

Similar to last week’s performance at Ellis Park, the Springboks weren’t at their peak, but they did enough to grind out a win against the All Blacks. The lineouts were inconsistent, they struggled at the breakdown, decision-making was questionable at times, and discipline was lacking. However, their unyielding defense, standing firm against relentless All Black attacks, was where they truly excelled.

SPRINGBOKS LAY DOWN A MARKER IN STYLE

Damian de Allende – 8/10
Often a polarizing figure, but today he was nothing short of spectacular. A dominant presence in midfield and rightly earned the Man of the Match award for his performance.

Siya Kolisi – 8/10
Despite a broken nose, Kolisi delivered a vintage performance reminiscent of his younger days. Leading from the front, both in action and spirit, he capped off his influential outing with a crucial, game-changing try early in the second half before being substituted for Kwagga Smith.

Ruan Nortje – 7/10
A tireless workhorse throughout the game. While the Springboks’ lineout struggles were evident, Nortje was outstanding in all other areas. It was fitting that he secured possession at the final lineout, sealing the win by running the ball into touch.

Handre Pollard – 6/10
Pollard had a quiet game in attack, to say the least. However, his aggressive defense in the flyhalf channel was pivotal, as he kept Damian McKenzie and the All Blacks’ dangerous attack at bay.
