Prediction: T20 Triangular – New Zealand vs South Africa – Second Match

South Africa began their campaign in the Zimbabwe triangular on a successful note with a comfortable run-chase against the hosts in the debut T20 International match at Harare. Despite losing their openers early against comeback bowler Richard Ngarawa, the Proteas steadied their ship with Rubin Hermann’s 47(35), and some firebrand batting from Dewald Brevis 41(17). Later, Corbin Bosch 23(15) ensured they were safely home with four overs to spare.

The Proteas now face the challenge of facing New Zealand. Historically, the African side has dominated the rivalry, winning eight of their previous ten encounters. Stunningly, the two sides last met in a T20 International fixture nearly a decade ago. Both sides play a T20 International series following their successful series victories against Pakistan earlier this year.

The Proteas have rested many of their key players for this series. New Zealand however, have sported a strong squad despite a few last-minute changes. Finn Allen’s omission due to an injury led to Devon Conway, Jimmy Neesham, and Tim Robinson, Mitchell Hay being added to the squad.

The only change the Proteas are likely to make is make way for Gerald Coetzee for Andile Simelane. Simelane was expensive against Zimbabwe, giving away 29 runs in 2 overs. Left arm orthodox spinner George Linde was instrumental [3-0-10-3] in Proteas’ victory against the Chevrons. In addition to Linde, Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger will be a challenge to the Kiwis’ lineup of Devon Conway, Tim Robinson, Daryl Mitchell, Mitch Hay, & Jimmy Neesham.

Skipper Mitchell Santner along with No.1 T20 bowler Jacob Duffy, and seasoned campaigners Williams O’Rourke and Matt Henry will be a challenge for the Proteas openers to make a mark in the powerplay. The Kiwis have played three T20 International matches at Harare and won each of them. On paper, they look a formidable side with a better pace attack than the Proteas.

All eyes will be on Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman’s inclusion in the playing eleven. Robin Walter, who coached South Africa for two years, now moves to his next assignment – New Zealand.

Prediction: New Zealand (60%)
