The Proteas have officially appointed Laura Wolvaardt as the new captain for the women’s cricket team across multiple formats.
Wolvaardt assumes the role on a permanent basis after a successful stint as interim captain during recent tours to Pakistan and New Zealand.
LAURA WOLVAARDT NAMED AS NEW CAPTAIN
Wolvaardt takes over from Sune Luus, who led the South African women’s team to the final of the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Luus had taken over from former captain Dane van Niekerk, who faced challenges with form and fitness and ultimately retired.
The appointment of Laura Wolvaardt as the official captain, along with a mix of young and experienced players, is seen as a positive move for succession planning within the team. It also aligns with the team’s excitement about giving opportunities to young players who can make a significant impact in upcoming tours, according to Clinton du Preez, the convenor of selectors.
“A few of our senior players are unavailable for the T20 leg of the Bangladesh Tour due to injuries and their commitments in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL),” explained du Preez. “This allows us to have a closer look at players for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for next year in Bangladesh.”
“The inclusion of Ayanda Hlubi and Eliz-Mari Marx instills confidence in rewarding exceptional performances at the professional level. They have made significant contributions with their domestic performances in the past season for their respective provinces.”
