Is Rassie Erasmus considering extending his contract until the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia?
Rassie Erasmus is bound by contract to SA Rugby until at least 2025, unless he decides to extend it sooner.
Following the Rugby World Cup, Jacques Nienaber left the Springboks to join Leinster. It appears, however, that Erasmus won’t be immediately following Nienaber to Dublin.
RASSIE ERASMUS CONTRACTED UNTIL 2025
Nienaber’s departure has fueled speculation about Erasmus’s future.
Reports earlier this year suggested that Erasmus was a candidate to replace David Nucifora as Ireland’s performance director. Despite his denials, these rumors persist, partly due to comments from former Springbok Victor Matfield.
Matfield speculated on Erasmus’s future, suggesting that he might join Ireland or Leinster eventually. “Knowing Rassie and Jacques (Nienaber), who do everything together, I think the chance of him going to Ireland is 90-95%,” Matfield stated on the Rugby Pod.
RASSIE ERASMUS’ CONTRACT DURATION
Erasmus won’t leave SA Rugby right after the Rugby World Cup unless he negotiates an early contract release.
He clarified this before the Springboks’ match against Ireland at the RWC, stating that there had been no contact between the parties. “No, I won’t be involved with Ireland or follow Jacques [Nienaber] in any way. There have been no talks, and that’s not true. I’m not sure where the rumor started, but it’s definitely not happening,” he asserted.
ERASMUS’ PLANS UNTIL 2025
Erasmus might take on a more hands-on role with the team before his contract ends. There’s speculation that he could even return to the head coach role temporarily.
Some believe Erasmus is unlikely to pass up the opportunity to lead the Springboks in another World Cup.
