SOUTH Africa got off to a flying start at the All Africa Games held in Maputo, Mozambique.
In the football section South African Senior National Women’s team, Banyana Banyana, as well as the National Under 23 squad both registered wins in their opening matches of the tournament.
Banyana Banyana defeated neighbours Zimbabwe 4-1, while Shakes Mashaba’s side brushed aside hosts Mozambique by defeating them 3-1. Both matches were played on Sunday, 4 September 2011.
Mozambique had gone ahead in the sixth minute through a Reginaldo goal, but South Africa rallied to find the equaliser in the 25 minute from Sibusiso Khumalo of Mamelodi Sundowns. Amazulu’s Thamsanqa Sangweni increased the lead before Sundowns’ Jabulani Shongwe put in the third and final goal in the 65th minute. The match was played at the Estadio do Zimpeto.
Shakes Mashaba’s boys will play Ghana on Wednesday, 10 September. They will face off against Libya on Saturday, 10 September in their final group stages match.
South Africa is in Group A for the men’s championship.
The women’s team won with goals from Sesebo Mokhopa and Nocawe Citi, who scored one each, with the other two coming from Kgadi Mokoma. South Africa next faces Tanzania on Thursday 8 September and Ghana on Sunday 11 September.-Safa.net
