SA women's hockey team bags another trophy

The South African women’s hockey team are still in a celebration mood after they recorded a 5-1 victory on aggregate against China.

This after they team won 2-1 in Johannesburg leg of the Investec International Series in Randburg yesterday. 

The home team was awarded a penalty in the early minutes of the match through Illse Davids.  To convert the goal was Pietie Coetzee who beat Chinese goalkeeper Li Ji to find the back of the net to register her 209 in 214 Tests.

Coetzee decreased the gap to 12 goals behind Russian Natella Krasnikova’s record of 220 which has earned her respect from South African hockey fans.

To add to the visitors’ nightmare, in-form midfielder Davids equalized through an expert taken corner move to score a magnificent goal.

China was down but not out when Huang Xuejiao scored from a penalty corner which South African keeper Sanani Mangisa could do nothing but watch as it went past her goal-line.

South African captain and World All Stars midfielder Marsha Marescia was named the Player of the Match after showcasing yet another world class perfomance.

South Africa, who are ranked 12th in the world have booked a date with Belgium and world No 4 China in the remaining matches of the series which moves Tuesday, February 1 at the University of Free States hockey centre in Bloemfontein for eight consecutive days of Test matches.

In other news, Azerbaijan upset world No.17 Belgium with a 6-0 victory.
