SASOL Women's League kicks-off

THE 2011/2012 Sasol League Season kicks off in earnest this weekend in eight provinces.

In KwaZulu Natal the league will commence on the on November 5 and 6. This was agreed at a meeting of the SAFA Competitions Committee with the Sasol League Teams over the past weekend to address outstanding issues raised at the first meeting on September 24.

Following a meeting between the Competitions Committee of the South African Football Association and the SAFA Women’s Football Committee, and in consultation with sponsors Sasol, it was agreed that the competition should go ahead while some of the recommendations of the Teams are being considered by the relevant SAFA authority.

The Competitions Committee visited all the provinces to hold pre-season meetings with all the Sasol League teams in the month of September 2011. The teams had some inputs regarding the running of the league, and these are receiving attention while the league continues.

Some of the concerns raised include a request to increase travelling subsidies for the clubs. This matter has been referred to the SAFA Finance Committee for consideration. The clubs had also made a plea to have two streams. This has been granted and will kick in with the start of the league. The league will run for five weeks before the Christmas break and resume in January 2012.

“Despite some challenges, we have decided to go ahead with the 2011/2012 Sasol League season as this also has a bearing on the preparations of Banyana Banyana for the 2012 London Olympic Games because some of the girls in the league play for the national team so we have to keep them active. While we are looking into the issues raised, we should also not lose sight of the bigger picture to help Banyana Banyana to prepare thoroughly. Clubs will be informed of the outcome of the process which will run parallel with league activities,” said Sam Masitenyane, chairperson of the SAFA Competitions Committee.

A comprehensive plan is being put together to use the Sasol League 2011/12 season to help Banyana Banyana with their preparations for 2012 London Olympic Games and details will be communicated early in the new year..
