Former Proteas captains AB de Villiers and Graeme Smith have come to the defense of Temba Bavuma after his underwhelming performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Graeme Smith, a former Proteas captain with nearly a decade of leadership experience, has expressed his confidence in Temba Bavuma’s ability to bounce back from his disappointing World Cup campaign. The 33-year-old Proteas ODI captain struggled with the bat in India, managing only 145 runs in eight matches with an average of 18.12. Bavuma faced criticism not only for his lackluster batting but also for some of his on-field decisions following South Africa’s semi-final exit against Australia.
Smith acknowledged that it’s customary for leaders like Bavuma to face scrutiny and criticism from fans. He emphasized the importance of handling such pressure and challenges as part of the leadership role. Smith stated, “You have to attend every press conference, take responsibility for your team, and accept the scrutiny that comes with being a leader. If you don’t perform, it’s natural that your position will come under scrutiny, and that’s something you have to deal with as a leader.”
He also highlighted that as a captain, it’s not the role to blame other players or make excuses. Instead, it’s essential to accept responsibility and move forward. Smith encouraged Bavuma to view this as an opportunity to gain experience, make a comeback, and demonstrate his true capabilities, stating, “Hopefully, it will be an opportunity for him to gain experience, come back strong, and show everyone what he’s made of.”
Despite his struggles at the World Cup, Bavuma is set to continue as captain of the ODI side.
Former Proteas batsman AB de Villiers joined in supporting the Proteas captain and urged fans not to be too harsh on him, emphasizing the importance of not breaking him down during this challenging period.
