The Springboks have had towering figures in their team, with the tallest players emerging predominantly in 21st-century rugby.
The tallest individuals to don the green and gold of the Springboks have mostly appeared in recent years.
THE TALLEST SPRINGBOKS IN HISTORY
A notable mention goes to former Cheetahs lock JP Du Preez, who surpasses the height of any Springbok player but hasn’t played internationally. Du Preez reportedly stands at 2.08 meters.
EBEN ETZEBETH – 2.04M
Eben Etzebeth boasts an impressive 119 Springbok caps and ranks among the top four tallest players to ever wear the jersey.
Etzebeth was first called up to the Springbok team by Heyneke Meyer ahead of a three-match series against England in June 2012.
His agility and ball-carrying prowess are remarkable considering his immense stature. Additionally, he excels at charging down box kicks.
Etzebeth currently plays for the Sharks at the franchise level, having joined them for the 2022/23 URC season.
LOOD DE JAGER – 2.06M
Despite his youthful appearance, Lood De Jager operates with a massive frame, reportedly standing at 2.05m or 2.06m.
He ranks as either the third or second-tallest Springbok of all time.
De Jager played for the Leopards in his youth and also represented NWU Pukke, the university team based in Potchefstroom.
A health condition has posed a threat to De Jager’s career, and he might have played his final Test for the Springboks.
RG SNYMAN – 2.06M
Another member of this group is double Rugby World Cup winner RG Snyman, who scored a crucial try in the 2023 tournament semi-final against England.
Snyman’s imposing presence on the field, reminiscent of a Viking, instills fear in opponents. He is a relentless lock who contributes significantly to his team’s efforts.
Snyman’s rugby journey began with the Blue Bulls in primary school when he participated in the 2008 Under-13 Craven Week competition.
He has been a standout performer for Munster and was part of their URC-winning squad in the 2022/23 season.
