Lions star Sanele Nohamba was a surprise omission from the Springboks’ first Test squad. Let’s explore why he may have been left out.
This year, Sanele Nohamba seemed almost certain to be included in the Springboks’ wider squad. The versatile back initially made his mark as a dynamic scrumhalf with a powerful kicking game. However, the 25-year-old transitioned to flyhalf this season, and the move has paid off immensely.
Nohamba has been one of the standout players in South Africa, providing a significant spark for the Lions at flyhalf. His accurate goal-kicking remains a key feature of his game.
There is little doubt that Nohamba caught the attention of the Springbok coaches, as he was included in preliminary alignment camps earlier this year. Yet, the question was how the Springbok coaches would accommodate him once the international season began.
Considering Nohamba as a Test flyhalf after recently making the position switch would be a significant decision for the Springbok management. His size might also be a concern for the highly physical nature of Test matches. Nevertheless, his X factor and ability to cover multiple positions made him an attractive option, particularly for a spot on the bench.
Sanele Nohamba Overlooked by the Springboks?
This past weekend, the Springboks’ first significant Test squad of the year was announced. Although there weren’t many surprises, Nohamba’s omission stood out. There was no mention of an injury, but it is important to note that Nohamba recently suffered a heavy blow to the head, possibly a concussion, which may have ruled him out of contention.
The Springboks will open their season against Wales on 22 June, followed by back-to-back Tests against Ireland (ranked second in the world) in Pretoria and Durban on 6 and 13 July, respectively.
After this, the Springboks will play a historic first Test against Portugal in Bloemfontein on 20 July. Perhaps, this could be when Nohamba is brought back into the squad.
