Ulster coach Dan McFarland has expressed high praise for Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff following his impressive performance since joining the team in Belfast.
Following Ulster’s narrow 22-21 victory over Leinster in the United Rugby Championship, McFarland highlighted Kitshoff’s significant impact. The two-time Rugby World Cup winner, who joined Ulster at the season’s beginning, began playing after the global tournament in France.
Kitshoff’s arrival in Belfast was timely, helping the team reverse a four-game losing streak in December. Under his influence, Ulster secured three consecutive wins, including notable victories against Racing 92 and Leinster.
McFarland emphasized that Kitshoff, renowned as one of the world’s best scrummagers, has greatly contributed to the team, particularly in open play. “He arrives with immense credibility. His play around the park is probably his biggest contribution,” McFarland stated. Kitshoff’s insights during a recent scrum meeting left a lasting impression on the team, and his on-field performance, including strong carries, defensive plays, and jackal threats, has been exemplary.
Kitshoff is also emerging as a team leader, willing to voice his opinions and guide changes when necessary. “He’s not shy about speaking his mind when changes are needed,” McFarland noted. “As a double World Cup winner and captain of a URC-winning team, Steven is a top-notch player and leader.”
