Two-time World Cup champion Damian de Allende was among the first to celebrate as Milnerton High School’s first XV secured a remarkable upset victory over Bishops on Saturday.
Milnerton High achieved a thrilling away win against Bishops at the Riley Rees, while Grey College ended Paarl Gymnasium’s unbeaten streak in the school rugby season that same day.
Weekend Recap:
In the week’s most shocking result, Milnerton High overcame a 28-10 deficit to claim a narrow 31-28 victory against the southern suburbs powerhouse, Bishops, on the scenic Piley Rees field.
The win drew cheers and recognition from their most famous alumnus, Damian de Allende, who posted a photo of the final score on his Instagram story, excitedly captioning it: “Hook it into my veins Millies rugby.”
This victory follows closely on the heels of Milnerton’s dramatic comeback win against another affluent suburban team, Rondebosch Boys High, who are Bishops’ traditional rivals in the schools rugby scene.
On the same note, Rondebosch returned to form on Saturday, securing a resounding 55-22 victory in their south suburbs derby against South African College High School (SACS).
The week’s most awaited match was the Premier Interschools clash between Grey College and the previously unbeaten Paarl Gymnasium, a game that lived up to its billing.
Playing at home, Paarl Gym initially held a 17-10 lead at half-time, but Grey College showcased their resilience with a formidable comeback to clinch a nail-biting 29-27 victory.
For Paarl Gym, No 8 Quintin Potgieter stood out, scoring two tries for his team. However, the day was dominated by Grey College’s midfield duo, Pieter van der Merwe and Ethan Adams, who tore through Gym’s defense to score three tries between them.
Other notable school rugby outcomes included Queen’s College taking the upper hand in their annual rivalry with Eastern Cape’s Dale College, winning 29-15. Paul Roos remained unbeaten with a 25-10 victory over Paarl Boys High in a Winelands school derby, and Monument began their Noordvaal Cup campaign with a 31-25 win against Helpmekaar College.
