Springbok’s WhatsApp Status Fuels More Rumors

A sidelined Springbok has sent a message to his critics following his non-selection by Rassie Erasmus.

Joseph Dweba Remains in Good Spirits Despite Springbok Snub

Springbok and Stormers hooker Joseph Dweba’s playing career has become a hot topic following his omission from the national Test squad.

When Rassie Erasmus named his Springbok squad for the ongoing two-Test series against Ireland a fortnight ago, Dweba was one of the notable omissions.

Widely regarded as the Springboks’ third hooker option behind double World Cup winners Malcolm Marx and Bongi Mbonambi, Dweba’s exclusion raised eyebrows. Erasmus’ decision to select rookie Johan Grobbelaar and Jan-Hendrik Wessels (both from the Bulls) ahead of Dweba clearly indicated that he has slipped further down the Springbok hooker pecking order.

Despite Erasmus and his team insisting that Dweba remains part of their future plans by naming him on the ‘standby list,’ foreign clubs have interpreted the latest snub as an opportunity to lure him away from the Stormers.

Reports suggest that several French clubs and England’s Sale Sharks are keen to secure Dweba’s signature.

Stormers Won’t Stop Springbok from Leaving

When asked about Dweba’s playing future and whether his team will fend off interest from overseas clubs, Stormers boss John Dobson revealed they would allow the player to leave if that is what he desires.

“Joe has a contract with the Stormers till the end of June 2025, which I’m sure he will see out,” Dobson told @rugby365com. “We are very happy with his progress this season, which has brought him back into the Springbok mix.

“As has been the case in the past, if a player gets a life-changing opportunity for him and his family, we are open to discussing if it can be worked out. We want the very best for our players and their futures.”

Dweba Has Other Plans

With rumors swirling about whether the Springbok is considering potential overseas deals or turning down lucrative offers, the man himself provided a cryptic update.

Dweba candidly posted a simple one-liner to his WhatsApp status: “I’m here to stay,” followed by two wink emoticons.
