The Springboks will compete in their inaugural match as world champions at the neutral venue of Twickenham, following the addition of a Test against Wales to the 2024 schedule.
Wales is set to face the world champion Springboks in a singular Test match at Twickenham on 22 June 2024.
Tickets for the event will be available for purchase starting Friday, 23 February at 10:00 (12:00 SA time) through Ticketmaster, Ticketek, and the RFU. This game marks South Africa’s first appearance following their triumph at the Rugby World Cup in France last year, alongside the official reinstatement of Rassie Erasmus as head coach.
In addition to facing the Springboks at Twickenham, Warren Gatland’s squad will head to Australia for two Test matches, with the first taking place in Sydney on 6 July and the second in Melbourne a week thereafter.
Due to major concerts at the Principality Stadium in June, including performances by Taylor Swift, Pink, and Foo Fighters, the venue will not host the South Africa match. The game coincides with the United Rugby Championship (URC) final and falls outside World Rugby’s international window, which may lead to both teams being without several key players.
Erasmus reminisced about the warm-up match against the All Blacks at Twickenham last year, noting the memorable 2015 World Cup quarterfinal against Wales at the same venue.
The most recent clash between Wales and the Springboks ended in a decisive 52-16 victory for South Africa in Cardiff before the 2023 World Cup.
Gatland highlighted the importance of competing against the world champions at a neutral location for his young team, emphasizing the invaluable experience. He also acknowledged the challenge of facing Australia, especially with Joe Schmidt as the new head coach, noting Australia’s eagerness to rebound from their World Cup performance.
