The Stormers have assembled a team rich in Springbok talent for their upcoming match against Edinburgh, naming a Test star as their new captain.
The addition of Frans Malherbe to the lineup brings the total number of Springboks in the Stormers squad to eight for this Saturday’s URC match against Edinburgh.
As the URC season progresses towards its critical stages, the Stormers find themselves just outside the top eight qualifying positions. They are under pressure to secure as many victories as possible in the coming weeks to ensure their place in the playoffs.
SPRINGBOKS BOLSTER STORMERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES
For their confrontation with Edinburgh in Cape Town this Saturday, coach John Dobson has called upon his strongest forces, including eight Springboks for the match day squad.
The most significant news — impacting both the franchise and the national team — is the comeback of Frans Malherbe following a five-month hiatus due to injury.
Malherbe, who played a pivotal role in the Springboks’ 2023 World Cup final, had been sidelined with a back injury but now returns to the Stormers’ starting XV, fully recovered.
In a major shift in team leadership, Salmaan Moerat has overcome his injuries to assume the role of captain.
The starting lineup features Springboks such as fullback Damian Willemse, flyhalf Manie Libbok, and No 8 Evan Roos, while the bench will be strengthened by front rowers Joseph Dweba and Lizo Gqoboka, along with scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies.
Another Springbok, Deon Fourie, will be absent from the game due to a minor injury.
STORMERS READY TO EXCEL AT HOME FORTRESS
John Dobson expressed his team’s eagerness to perform well in a vital series of home games.
“We’re excited to welcome back some key players into our squad. After more than two months, it will be wonderful to return to DHL Stadium.
“A lot of effort has been put into our training sessions over the past few weeks, and we’re looking forward to showcasing the results.
“With several important home games ahead, it’s crucial for us to start strong and build momentum against a formidable Edinburgh team,” he stated.
