Springboks Take a Philosophical Approach to Injury Challenges

Rassie Erasmus Confident in Springboks’ Makeshift Second-Row Amid Injury Challenges

Rassie Erasmus is content with the Springboks’ makeshift second-row selections, with Pieter-Steph du Toit stepping up to start at lock. Despite the injuries plaguing the Springboks, particularly in the second row, Erasmus sees this as an opportunity rather than a setback.

Springboks’ Response to Injury Woes

Erasmus has expressed confidence in Ruan Nortje and Pieter-Steph du Toit, who will start at lock in the upcoming third Rugby Championship match. The return of Jasper Wiese after his suspension has also been a welcome boost for the team.

“It’s not ideal to have so many injuries at lock, but we’re pleased with how Ruan performed in our last match, and we’re confident he’ll combine well with Pieter-Steph at lock,” Erasmus said. “This is a great opportunity for him to prove himself against one of the best teams in the world.”

He also praised Wiese’s return: “It’s great to have a player of Jasper’s calibre back. We know he’ll bring energy on both attack and defense after waiting patiently to return to the field. We’re looking forward to seeing his physicality alongside the rest of the back row.”

Settled Backline a Plus for Springboks

Erasmus believes that the stability in the backline will benefit the Springboks as they play on home soil.

“We have a settled backline, and Aphelele Fassi made a strong statement against the Wallabies in Perth. We’re excited to see what they can do against a highly attack-oriented All Black backline,” Erasmus added.

“We’ve seen what these players can do under pressure in Australia, and we’re confident they’ll build on that performance against the All Blacks.”

Eben Etzebeth’s Status

Erasmus revealed that Eben Etzebeth might have been available for this round but decided not to risk a longer injury.

“Eben could have played this week if absolutely necessary, but we believe it’s better to select a player who is 100% fit. Salmaan will also be back in contention next week after completing the return-to-play protocols,” he explained.

“We’re happy that the situation will ease significantly for us in that department going into the second Test.”

All Blacks Expected to Bring Their Best

Erasmus anticipates a fierce challenge from the All Blacks, who will be eager to avenge their Rugby World Cup final loss.

“They’ll be highly motivated, still hurting from the World Cup final. They know how crucial a win is to square things up and open up the Rugby Championship standings,” Erasmus said.

“They’re a quality team with several players who have that X-factor, and they constantly pose a threat to our defense. We need to start well and be at our best in all areas to build on what we’ve done in the competition so far.”

Erasmus acknowledged the challenge ahead: “This will be a completely different test compared to Australia, and the next two matches will require us to step up our game. But we’re excited to see if we can elevate our performance and give ourselves the best chance to win the Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019.

“So, we’ll give it our all and hope that effort reflects on the scoreboard.”
